Overview

Qnest is a residence and co-living platform designed for students in Kenya who are navigating one of the most stressful parts of college life: finding safe, affordable, and well-managed accommodation. Alongside the student experience, Qnest also serves residence owners and administrators with a powerful dashboard to manage occupancy, payments, maintenance, and operations from a single system. The goal was to create a platform that feels welcoming and simple for students, while remaining data-driven and efficient for administrators.

The Problem

For many students, finding a PG or co-living space is a fragmented and unreliable experience. Information is scattered across WhatsApp groups, word of mouth, outdated listings, and offline brokers. Availability is unclear, pricing lacks transparency, and trust is often built too late. On the other side, residence operators struggle with manual tracking of bookings, payments, occupancy, and maintenance requests. Decisions are reactive rather than informed, and operational inefficiencies grow as properties scale. There was no single system connecting both sides with clarity.

Qnest had the opportunity to become a trusted bridge between students and residence operators. The challenge was to design an experience that balances emotional reassurance for students with operational control for admins, without overcomplicating either side.

The product needed to feel friendly and approachable for first-time users while still being robust enough to support large-scale residence management.

The design approach started with understanding two very different mindsets. Students arrive anxious and uncertain, looking for clarity, safety, and belonging. Administrators arrive focused on numbers, efficiency, and visibility.

For students, the experience was designed to feel calm, guided, and encouraging. Visual storytelling, warm colors, and simple language were used to reduce friction and make onboarding feel less transactional and more supportive.

For admins, the focus shifted to structure and insight. Information density was carefully balanced with readability, allowing key metrics to surface without overwhelming the user. The dashboard was designed to support quick decision-making rather than passive reporting.

Across both experiences, consistency in branding and interaction patterns helped create a unified system rather than two disconnected products.
